The Ensemble

Tobatana
Marimba plays Afro-pop music derived primarily from Zimbabwe and other parts
of Africa. Our instrumentation includes soprano, tenor, baritone and bass
marimbas, hosho (gourd rattles), mbira (the ancient Zimbabwean “thumb
piano”), horns, drum kit and vocals. In the Shona language, Tobatana
translates, “We are coming together.”
Our Music

Our CDs
|
|
The music we play is a combination of the traditional music of the
Shona culture of Zimbabwe,
"Township" music from South Africa and contemporary tunes. We
offer a unique melodic blend of percussive instruments.
The Shona music was
brought to the United States by
Dumisani Maraire
who came to the United
States in 1967 as an artist-in-residence at the University of Washington
in Seattle.
He taught and
passed on this music in the oral tradition, thus beginning a culture of
Zimbabwean music enthusiasts throughout the U.S. and Canada.
|
After six years of
requests for more of our music, we produced our second CD, “Zin’anga,”
in the spring of 2007. Zin’anga reflects our current sound and includes
ancient and contemporary tunes, drum kit, vocals and horns.
Our first CD
Hidden Voices
(2001) is
still available.
